It started as a feeling
A DESIRE TO make a change
A CHALLENGE TO CHASE YOUR DREAMS

Project Humboldt started as a never-ending feeling to make a change in life. A change which would take us all on a journey off the beaten path. At the age of 28, I decided to quit my job as renewable project engineer and chase the dream of building a unique tiny house on wheels with focus on sustainability and people. With a clear mindset behind the project, it’s important to share two personal reflections.

The transition towards a sustainable and carbon-neutral world is critical for our present and future generations. Convinced we’re equally responsible to act and push for change, Project Humboldt is a small-scale sustainable initiative towards this transition. By exploring the challenges and sharing some interesting insights and solutions, Project Humboldt also hopes to inspire others to reflect and push the transition together.

As people, we sometimes forget the unique power of sharing in life and achieving great things together. Project Humboldt is therefore an open invitation to everyone interested and enthusiastic to get involved and join this unique journey, there are plenty of seats in the bus. The roadbook is still blank at this stage, but expect to avoid the common easy roads and rather explore exciting alternatives and discover some new viewpoints together.

My greatest wish with Project Humboldt is to build “our bus” and not “my bus”.

THE BUS

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

The journey starts with the search for a perfect bus. Somehow fascinated by American school buses - very unique here on the Belgian roads - the quest was soon defined. After some months of searching, we came across a recently imported American school bus for sale in the Netherlands, call it coincidence or meant to be? A single visit was sufficient to know this was our perfect bus. Project Humboldt was born in the summer of 2022.

DESIGN

18 M2 of space

Converting an American school bus into a tiny house (a so-called “skoolie”) is definitely not new. Numerous completed projects exist around the world and provide a valuable source of inspiration. As design is often dominated by aesthetics, ease of construction and costs, Project Humboldt aims to be a little different and focus on ecological and sustainable solutions. We will further explore what it takes to make the project carbon-neutral over its lifetime.

BUILD

STEP BY STEP

The build of Project Humboldt is narrated in the form of a central timeline and chapters describing the major steps of the journey. A photo diary is included in every chapter and allows to virtually (re)experience each step from the front seat. The project’s carbon footprint and compensation measures are described in this build section as well. Curious on the current state of the bus and the project?

CREW

PROUD TO CONTRIBUTE

Teamwork makes the dream work, a powerful mindset. The crew of Project Humboldt is a growing and enthusiastic community built around the project in which the best ideas are shared and together we aim to successfully complete the project. Explore everyone’s contribution to the project in the Humboldt Wall of Fame.

PARTNERS

MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

This project would not be possible without the help and involvement of some professional partners. They all deserve a special acknowledgement and recognition for their services.

SPECIAL OFFER

FOR FRIENDS & FAMILY

Ik heb lang nagedacht op welke creatieve manier ik jullie echt kan betrekken in dit project en er ook een beetje “jullie bus” van te maken.
